Too busy? Start here

Before touching keywords or creative, check the basics of your tracking. The Meta pixel and the Google tag installed and firing on every page, UTM tags on every ad link, plus every real enquiry counted as a conversion, whether it is a form, a call or a tour booking. Only then worry about cookie restrictions and iPhone privacy settings eating a share of what is left. Fix the tracking first and the platforms start finding families instead of clicks.

Your Google keywords or Meta creatives might not be the problem. Honestly, that's rarely where we start when a childcare centre isn't getting enough enquiries from their ads.

The first thing we look at is tracking.

Google and Meta are only as good as what you tell them

Think of it this way. Google and Meta are basically learning machines. Every day they're hunting for more of whatever you've told them counts as a "win," and they'll spend your money doing it. Tell them the wrong thing counts as a win, or nothing at all, and they'll happily go find you more of the wrong thing, no matter how good your keywords or creative actually are.

This isn't some rare edge case, either. Between cookie restrictions, iPhone privacy settings, and ad blockers, a good chunk of your real conversions just don't make it back to the platform. It's not complicated to fix, though. You just need every real enquiry, a form, a phone call, someone booking a tour, actually getting counted in Google Tag Manager. Not just the ones that happen to land on a thank-you page.

Good data in, good data out. That's really the whole idea.

Where childcare conversion tracking usually breaks

Here's where we see it go wrong, most often.

  • The form tracking fires even when someone leaves a field blank or the form fails. So you're "counting" leads that never happened, and quietly teaching the algorithm the wrong lesson.
  • Phone calls and tour bookings never get logged anywhere. They happened. The platform just has no idea.

Neither's hard to fix. They're just easy to miss unless someone's actually looking for them.

How to check yours in five minutes

You don't need an agency to find out whether your tracking is telling the truth.

  • Open your landing page with the Meta Pixel Helper and Google Tag Assistant browser extensions and check both fire. Then click one of your own ads and check the landing page URL carries UTM tags. If either is missing, nothing further down this list will be reliable.
  • Fill in your own enquiry form with a test name, then look for it as a conversion in Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager the next day. If it isn't there, the platform never saw it.
  • Submit the form again with a required field left blank. If that shows up as a conversion too, the tag is firing on the button click rather than on a successful send.
  • Count last month's real enquiries in your inbox or CRM and compare the number to the conversions the platforms report. A big gap in either direction means the platforms are learning from the wrong list.
  • If you have a phone number on your ads or landing page, check whether calls are being tracked at all. For most centres they aren't.

Why this matters more than your keywords or creative

Once tracking's right, something great happens. You can finally see which ads and keywords are bringing in real families, not just clicks. So you put more money behind what's working, and stop wasting it on clicks that were never going anywhere. It's also the only way to tell a tracking problem from ad fatigue, which looks similar from the outside and needs a different fix.

Our first check, every time

That's why this is always our first move, before we even talk creative or targeting. Being data-driven isn't just a buzzword for us. It's genuinely how we start every childcare account.

If you're not sure your tracking's set up right, it's a pretty quick thing to check. Book a free ads audit and we'll go through it with you.
